| ADELPHI VILLAGE, EAST CANJE – The Lion’s Club of East Canje is now under new management. The new Secretary is Samuel Jaipersaud, Madam Ramadar – Treasurer. Rhyle Sookraj is the Membership Director and a Charter President. Other members of the executive body are Asmini Sookraj – First Year Director, Morris Sookraj – Second Year Director, Krishendat Durga–Tamer, and the Twister is Kowlessar.Mr. Devindra Sookraj outlined his plans for this fiscal year, the major one being a venture aimed at reducing illiteracy within the Canje zone.This is to commence during the last week in August and would entail visits to specific homes between Borlam Turn on the Corentyne and East Canje including Baracara up the Canje River. Families would be identified by the members of the Lion’s Club of East Canje and focus will only be on those who have not been attending school.After interviewing the parents or guardians, the necessary assistance would be given to ensure that the child is enrolled at a school and attends the facility regularly.Where required, school uniforms, books and the necessary paraphernalia would be distributed.He expressed concern over the number of persons who cannot read a simple sentence or even write their names. The Lion’s Club of East Canje intends to hold bi-monthly sessions with the children to assist in their academic and social development.Other projects include the distribution of wheelchairs to elderly persons within their catchment area. This is slated for September and October.The annual medical outreach programme to Baracara is set for November. This would be conducted in collaboration with the New Amsterdam Hospital.Sookraj explained that whatever funds are raised by the club, is expended on community development. |
